‘A l'image de St Thibault’ Jug

Date : 1716

The main part of the jug depicts a view of the interior of a hosiery shop, the shop building as a whole standing out against a rolling maritime landscape largely inspired by Delftware. This type of finely worked decoration was commonly used to embellish pieces intended for shopkeepers’ clientele but would later be applied with less meticulous care than is evident here. The inscription A Limage de St Thibault/18 juillet 1716 (In the Image of St Thibault/18 July 1716) and the delicacy of the design suggest that this was intended as a commemorative piece.
