This ensemble still has the blue border that separated each panel of the ornamental paving. The composition is arranged around the coat of arms of Anne de Montmorency: gold with a red cross and sixteen blue eagles surmounted by a baron’s coronet and encircled by the Collar of the Order of Saint Michael. Two gauntleted fists brandishing swords burst from clouds of smoke, creating a frame around the shield. The banners display two of the Constable’s mottos: Fidus et verax in justitia judicat et pugnat (only he who is faithful and truthful in justice can judge and do battle) and Arma tenenti omnia dat qui justa negat (he who refuses what is just gives up everything to an enemy in arms).
