The sword, emblem of Constable Anne de Montmorency, divides the composition of this panel into two equal halves, creating an obvious symmetry. It is encircled by its baldric, decorated with fleurs de lys, and sits on its scabbard. On each side of the sword the two monograms, AM, for Anne (de Montmorency) and Madeleine (de Savoie) are framed by two cornucopias.
